ARCHIVED - Man saved from drowning on Marbella beach
The two men who rescued him are being praised as heroes and given Medals of Merit
A local police officer and a sailor from the Virgen del Carmen marina saved a swimmer on Sunday February 19 on the beach of La Venus, in the centre of Marbella on the Costa del Sol.
The rescue took place in the afternoon when marina employee Francisco Campos received a warning that a man who was bathing on the central Marbella beach had been trapped by the waves and was having difficulty reaching the shore due to the adverse sea conditions.
Once in the port area, Campos saw a local police officer who was trying to jump onto the jetty to gain access to a boat. They boarded together, cut the lines and, despite the swell and the storm, reached the place where the man was.
He was rescued as others who were on the beach at the time looked on, while officers on the shore calmed the man’s relatives.
“The man was not far away, so we were able to get there quickly and rescue him between the two of us,” said Campos.
The Local Police officer highlighted “the dedication of the sailor and the crucial action of his colleagues who managed to calm the family and prevent more people from getting into the water”.
Both men are being put forward as recipients of the Civil Protection Medal of Merit from Marbella Town Hall.
Councillor for Security, José Eduardo Díaz, said, “The residents of Marbella can be proud to have emergency personnel who provide an effective response when there is an extreme situation like this one.”
