Murcia Chief Inspector investigated for smuggling drugs into the Region
The Murcia officer had supposedly been working in the fight against drug trafficking in Colombia
A high-ranking police officer has been arrested for his alleged involvement in a drug trafficking ring that smuggled narcotics into the Region of Murcia from South America. The officer, Juan Carlos G, was arrested on Saturday March 23 in Vigo and is being investigated by the Court of Instruction number 7 of Murcia.
Juan Carlos G was a chief inspector of the National Police and was stationed at the Spanish embassy in Colombia. He had been working as a liaison officer to promote international relations in the fight against drug trafficking. However, he was arrested as part of an investigation that began last summer following a complaint filed by the Prosecutor's Office.
The investigation revealed that Juan Carlos G was involved in a plot to introduce drugs into the Region of Murcia through the coast. He is believed to have worked with a group led by JG, the head of the anti-drug unit of the Murcia National Police, who was arrested in February and is currently in preventive detention.
The arrest of Juan Carlos G is seen as a significant blow to the police force, as he was a respected and experienced officer. However, the police force has faced similar scandals in the past.
In recent years, several officers have been arrested and convicted of drug-related offenses. For example, former inspector Juan José Llamas was sentenced to six years in prison for drug trafficking last January, and his predecessor, Francisco Moreno, was sentenced to a year and a half in prison for corruption.
According to legal sources, Juan Carlos G has been provisionally released on bail by the Murcian courts, but a judge has ordered that his passport be revoked and that he check in regularly with a parole officer.
