Murcia–Almería high-speed rail gets €6.3 million boost as new milestones reached
Fresh funding and faster progress promise big changes for rail links in southeast Spain
Work on the Murcia–Almería high-speed rail is picking up steam once again, thanks to a fresh €6.3 million boost from the Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility. Pieces are rapidly falling into place along this 200-kilometre route, which is set to transform travel between the regions.“Track laying is already underway on two-thirds of the route, pushing the long-awaited Murcia–Almería line closer to the finish line than ever before.” This week’s news brings another €5.3 million for expansion devices to keep the rails safe from temperature changes on the Vera–Almería stretch, plus an extra €1 million for backup power systems to support critical safety at Nonduermas as the line leaves Murcia.
“Preparations are moving forward for the tender of the Lorca San Diego–Vera section, keeping the project’s rhythm steady.” Minister Óscar Puente’s recent visits to construction sites, including the impressive Los Feos viaduct and the brand-new Murcia del Carmen station, show just how quickly everything is progressing.
“The final demolition of the Avenida Mediterráneo Bridge in Almería, finished ahead of schedule this summer, has cleared the way for the next phase of railway integration in the city.” With the bridge gone, the region’s future high-speed rail ties look even brighter.
With a massive €3.6 billion already invested and contracts out for state-of-the-art railway tech, it’s clear the Murcia–Almería high-speed connection isn’t just a dream, it’s now becoming a reality. Quicker journeys, stronger links, and bold upgrades are all on the horizon for southeast Spain.Image: Ministry of Transport
