Museo de la Semana Santa Minera, La Unión
The museum of the La Unión Semana Santa
The Museo de la Semana Santa Minera, the La Unión mining museum, is dedicated to the Easter week or Semana Santa celebrations which take place in the municipality every year.
As well as acting as a museum it is also the headquarters for the Ilustre Cofradía del Santísimo Cristo de los Mineros, the main brotherhood which organises and participates in, acts relating to Holy Week in the municipality of La Unión.
The lower floor holds a static exhibition of the robes worn during processions, as well as the standards and insignias of the brotherhoods and as a number of photographic displays relating to the events in La Unión. Upstairs, each Agrupación has its administrative office.
Outside is the Monumento al Procesionista, a bronze bas-relief by artist and sculptor, Esteban Bernal.
The building is located in Calle Salvador Pascual, and is opposite the old town hall,
La Unión is particularly famous for its saetas competition, a saeta being a simple song performed by a single voice and which is now held in the parroquial church each year.
The core image in the La Unión Semana Santa is Cristo de los Mineros, which was carved by Valencian artist José Gerique Chust ( 1868-1943) during 1913, which is carried down in a Via Crucis from the Mina Agrupa Vicenta on the Saturday night before Palm Sunday, an emotional and highly moving event which attracts hundreds of participants every year.
The museum is only opened for special events ( such as the Noche de los Museos, the annual night of the museums) and anyone with a specific interest in visiting should contact the Tourist Office for further details. Click for Tourist Office La Unión
