ARCHIVED - New Covid restrictions may be needed for Christmas: Andalusia Covid update November 15
The incidence rate continues its climb, prompting fears of a sixth wave of Covid in Spain
The cumulative incidence rate of coronavirus in Andalucía rose by almost one point over the weekend, continuing its upward trajectory in line with the rest of the country. While this incidence rate is lower than the national Spanish statistics, there are fears that Andalucía, like the rest of the country and wider Europe, is heading for a sixth wave of the disease.
Policy makers have already begun discussing the possibility of new restrictions as we get closer to Christmas.
New infections
There were more new infections this weekend than last week, although the number of new cases recorded over the last two days was lower than the previous three days. While last weekend saw 290 new Covid cases in Andalucía, there were 338 over the last 48 hours.
Cumulative incidence rate
The incidence rate continues to rise in Andalucía, although more slowly than in the last days of last week. Over the last two days, the 14-day cumulative incidence rate rose by 0.9 points up to 44.5 cases per 100,000 inhabitants.
This is well below the 70-odd in Spain as a whole, but the numbers are going in the same direction, and it doesn’t look good.
Huelva continues to be the province with the highest incidence rate of the disease, with 77.9, and Seville the lowest with 25.1.
Hospitalisations
The week-to-week number of people admitted to hospital with coronavirus stands at 66 new admissions, raising the total number of hospitalisations across the region to 57,026. Of these, 6,245 are in the ICU, 5 more from this time last week.
Deaths
Sadly, three people died of Covid-19 in Andalucía over the weekend, bringing the total death toll to 11,288.
Recovered
Since the beginning of the pandemic, 793,021 have had coronavirus and recovered from it.
Vaccinations
As booster vaccinations start for those who received one dose of the Janssen vaccine first time around, there is still almost one-fifth of the Andalusian population who haven’t been fully jabbed.
While 80.3% of over-18s are fully vaccinated and 81.7% have had at least one dose, this means that 18.3% of people who are eligible to get vaccinated still haven’t done so. Authorities are strongly urging anyone still holding off on getting vaccinated to do so as quickly as possible, because it is proven to save lives and the majority of people now being hospitalised due to Covid are unvaccinated.
