Brittany Ferries has announced the arrival of its new ‘cruise ferry,’ a passenger ship that has started operating between Ireland and Spain from this November. The impressive 214.5-metre liner is capable of carrying more than 1,000 passengers and signals a shift between the two countries in tourist transportation.

Until now, sea travel from Ireland to Spain had limited facilities for passengers and was mainly focused on freight, but the new ship is “more tourist-oriented” and boasts onboard shopping, games rooms, sundecks and ocean view cabins with video-on-demand staterooms.

The ship also features a tapas restaurant and a “fusion of Spanish, French and international flavours” at the main restaurant, Azur.

Passengers can enjoy “a Spanish city feel” at the Plaza Mayor bar, and there is a premium private lounge offered alongside the regular lounges.

The new journey will operate between Rosslare and Bilbao, in the north of Spain, and will depart twice weekly, on Wednesday and Friday mornings. The current route aboard the Connemara takes between 27 and 33 hours depending on the day of departure, with at least one night on board.

The prices for a one-way ticket for two passengers and a car sailing from Rosslare to Bilbao are currently quoted from 232 euros, with reclining seats included.

The price for two people with a car and cabin starts from 342 euros each-way.

Brittany Ferries has also launched a brand-new green energy ferry which offers passenger and freight transport from Portsmouth to Bilbao on the Salamanca, the company's first liner to be powered exclusively by liquified natural gas.
