ARCHIVED - New free train between Malaga city and the Caminito del Rey to launch in March 2023
A new Cercanías train service to El Caminito del Rey hiking trail in Malaga will start running five times a day as of this March
Spain’s Ministry of Transport, Mobility and Urban Agenda (Mitma) has approved the launch of a new Malaga-El Chorro-Caminito del Rey local Cercanías train service, which will begin operating in March 2023.
The Caminito del Rey is one of the main tourist attractions in the interior of Malaga province and receives hundreds of visitors every day, although until now they have mainly had to reach the notoriously dangerous hiking trail by private car or bus.
The current Media Distancia services will be complemented by the extension of two new return services on the C2 Cercanías line on the Álora-El Chorro/Caminito del Rey section, meaning there will be a total of five trains on weekdays going from Málaga city to El Chorro/Caminito del Rey and six going back the other way towards Málaga.
This is a three-year pilot scheme, extendable by agreement if there are enough passengers using the line to make it worth it.
It is expected to be free of charge for regular users during 2023, under the government’s much publicised free train travel scheme.
It has also been announced that there will be a regional discount ticket available for all trains, valid for 10 journeys within a window of 45 days for a given origin and destination.
Passengers will also be able to purchase a monthly pass for all trains, valid for unlimited compatible journeys between two specified stations, as long as they book a seat beforehand.
