New train line proposed in the Costa del Sol
The plan addresses the long-awaited rail connection between Malaga and Marbella
The regional government in Malaga is studying plans to build a railway connection between the Costa del Sol capital and the resort town of Marbella, a link that has been in high demand but put on the back burner for several years.
The administration is eager to expand the current service provided by the Cercanías line between Malaga and Fuengirola, and experts believe the new Marbella route would attract between 34 and 46 million passengers every year.
These trains would reach a speed of about 160 kilometres per hour and would complete the non-stop route from the Airport to Marbella in 22 minutes and in almost an hour if it makes stops in the different locations along the way.
However, as with all good things, the new rail connection won’t happen overnight; instead, the preliminary study estimates that the service will take around eight years to get up and running, and the initial budget has been placed at between 2.5 and 2.7 billion euros.
This extortionate cost is down to the fact that, since the Marbella-Malaga link would be a completely different line to the existing Malaga-Fuengirola one, 47 kilometres of new tracks would need to be built.
However, the research paper highly recommends keeping both train services “because there is demand for both and because the coast cannot be left without a train” while the new service is being constructed.
The new scheme would also provide easy access to the Costa del Sol hospital and bus station, as well as alleviating housing pressure in the resorts and coastal areas, according to train driver Pablo Marín.
“It solves housing problems as it is cheaper inland and it encourages social integration for people who live in remote areas.”
