ARCHIVED - Nine of the most dangerous roads for motorcyclists found in Malaga
The DGT has installed warning signs on some of the most lethal highways in Spain

Nine stretches of road in the province of Malaga have been listed among the one hundred most dangerous in Spain by the General Directorate of Traffic (DGT). The sinuous nature of these highways has led to 45 accidents in the last five years, resulting in six deaths, 24 hospitalisations and 20 other injuries.
In an attempt to reduce the number of accidents, the traffic authorities have erected vertical signs at the beginning of each section to warn motorists of the dangers by highlighting the number of motorcyclists injured on the particular stretch.
One of the lethal thoroughfares is the MA-3199 highway between Moclinejo and Benagalbon, which has claimed four victims. Provincial head of traffic in Malaga, Javier Salas, travelled to the area on Wednesday January 26 to launch the initiative.
“There are nine sections with the highest risk for motorcyclists that we have in the province, a number that is only surpassed by Santa Cruz de Tenerife and Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. With these signs we intend to appeal to drivers' awareness of the danger of these points,” Salas said.
The most dangerous spots are located in mountainous areas, with the exception of the road located between kilometres 300.1 and 302.4 of the N-340 in Nerja, which has racked up six victims in the last five years.
The section with the highest accident rate, with 15 motorcyclists involved in accidents, is in Igualeja between points 19.8 and 22.4 of the A-397, a road that is also especially dangerous as it passes through Benahavís (30.6- 32.6).
The list also includes two sections of the A-366 in the municipalities of Alozaina and Yunquera, as well as the A-405 as it passes through Gaucín, the MA-5105 in Frigiliana and the A-7045 in Antequera.
According to the experts, “the human factor is the main cause” of these tragic accidents rather than poor road conditions. So far this year, there have been seven fatal accidents on interurban roads in the province involving motorbikes, resulting in eight deaths.
