With the summer holidays on the horizon, many dog owners across Spain are once again faced with the same challenge: finding places to stay that will welcome their four-legged friends. According to a recent study by Rover.com, 86% of Spanish pet owners say they struggle to find pet-friendly accommodation when planning a trip.

 

In response, Rover.com has just released its third annual ‘Not Without My Dog 2025’ guide, packed with practical information for travelling with dogs. The guide covers 12 regions in Spain and includes tips on travel options, pet-welcoming hotels, dog-friendly beaches and parks, as well as restaurants and activities that are perfect for pets and their people.

 

The demand is certainly there. Rover’s research shows that 89% of dog owners want to bring their furry companions along on holiday, but 17% will only do so if they can find the right accommodation. Being allowed to leave a dog alone in the hotel room is a top priority for many, with 89% saying it is important and 42% saying it is non-negotiable.

 

Other factors influencing the decision include transport options (20%), extra costs (17%), stress for the animal (15%), and a general lack of information (13%). Despite these barriers, most pet owners are prepared to spend extra to travel with their dog. Over 50% would shell out up to 500 euros, and 11% say they would pay whatever it takes. Only 23% said they would not cover any additional costs.

 

The majority of pet parents are opting for holidays within Spain, with Andalusia topping the list of preferred destinations (22%), followed by the Valencian Community (12%) and Galicia (10%). Beaches and rural getaways are almost equally popular, with 45% favouring a coastal retreat and 44% choosing the tranquillity of the countryside. City breaks are less common, attracting just 11% of dog-owning travellers.

 

This new guide builds on earlier insights into Spain’s growing market for dog-friendly accommodation and services, such as the rise in pet-friendly hotels in Alicante.
