ARCHIVED - Number of flights to Malaga this year are more than double those of 2020
Tourism figures in the Costa del Sol in Andalucia are improving, according to new figures.
After a year of dramatically reduced tourism figures, the Costa del Sol is finally welcoming visitors back with the number of flights landing at Malaga this summer more than double those of last year.
A total of 3,429,066 seats will be offered on flights landing at Malaga Airport between June and September, according to head of Costa del Sol Tourism, Francisco Salado.
The figure is 101.6 per cent more than the number of seats offered on flights during the same period last year, with 1,700,000 more seats on offer this year, in a sign that the tourism sector is beginning to recover on the Costa del Sol.
Further figures even showed growth in the tourism sector this year compared to 2019 after it was revealed that in 2019 Malaga was connected by air routes with 31 countries, and is now connected to 32.
In addition, hotel figures are also improving, with occupancy standing at 40.96 per cent of the establishments which were open in May, and with 51.94 per cent of all hotels within the Association of Costa del Sol Hotel Entrepreneurs (Aehcos) now open.
Francisco Salado said the figures were good news for the prospects of tourism on the Costa del Sol this summer but warned that the vaccination programme in Andalucia would need to speed up further to be able to attract more tourists this summer after the UK has so far refused to add Spain to its travel green list due to its number of infections and vaccination figures.
