One dead in horror bus crash between Lorca and Pulpi

A dreadful crash on the road linking the municipalities of Lorca (Murcia) and Pulpí (Almería), near the exit by the Las Escarihuelas, has left one young woman dead and 13 people injured when a lorry overturned on a bus carrying day labourers at midday on Monday January 15.

Twelve people were taken to the Rafael Méndez Hospital in Lorca and one to the Virgen de la Arrixaca Hospital in Murcia, according to sources from the Emergency Coordination Centre.

At around 12.35pm on Monday, the Emergency Coordination Centre 112 Region of Murcia received several calls reporting the accident. Witnesses indicated that there were several people on the bus who were trapped and injured as a result of the lorry overturning on top of the bus.

There were 18 people on the bus, including the driver, who was unhurt. The Guardia Civil reported that the bus was carrying workers who were on their way back to Lorca at the end of their working day in the agricultural industry of Almería.

The lorry, which was carrying plastics, crossed into the oncoming lane and tried to swerve. As the load it was carrying was very heavy, it tipped over onto the bus, which was travelling under the bridge.

According to Spanish newspaper La Verdad, two of the injured people are in a serious condition. The woman who died was a 21-year-old who had only been employed at the company for a few months.

Lorca City Council has made psychological care available to the relatives of the deceased.
