ARCHIVED - One in three Malaga trains cancelled on Wednesday November 10
The ongoing suspension of trains in Andalucía is down to a shortage of drivers
The Renfe Cercanías train service in Malaga has proven to be a real headache for travellers in recent months, so much so that passenger numbers have plummeted as more and more people opt for private transport or other alternatives to avoid the uncertainty of the rail connections.
The problem is far from over, as Spain’s rail operator has announced that on Wednesday November 10 there will be a series of cancellations on lines C-1 between Malaga and Fuengirola and C-2, from Malaga to Álora.
The continuous disruptions are caused by an overall lack of drivers, so that any staff member calling in sick or booking a holiday will cause inevitable delays or cancellations.
A total of 40 trains will be cancelled on Wednesday, including the C-1 commuter service, Malaga’s most important and profitable line that usually completes 140 daily trips.

Renfe’s only hope of putting an end to this ongoing problem is to hire more drivers; the recruitment process was started last year but has been slowed down by the coronavirus pandemic. According to the rail company, the plan is to replace 110% of vacancies that have been created through resignations and dismissals, with a commitment to hiring 500 more drivers throughout Spain by the end of the year.
