Passengers kicked off Spain flight to make way for Sevilla FC players
Air Nostrum has agreed to compensate passengers who were left stranded in Vigo airport
Dozens of passengers were shocked last week when Air Nostrum left them stranded at Vigo airport in order to give their seats on a flight to Madrid to a group of Sevilla FC footballers.
Flight IB8869 to Madrid was scheduled to take off from the Galician city at 9.40pm on Saturday November 4 but bad weather conditions in the Spanish capital meant that the incoming plane didn’t arrive until 10.15pm.
At the same time, technical issues were discovered on the plane that was supposed to be carrying the Sevilla players and it was declared unfit to fly. Rather than inconveniencing the footballers, the airline offered them seats on flight IB8869, the last one scheduled that day, leaving more than 80 other passengers on the ground.
Those left behind were given two options: to travel by bus to Madrid at 8am on Sunday, a journey of more than six hours, or to book another flight on Monday.
The State Aviation Agency (AESA) is currently investigating the incident, which could constitute a breach of passenger rights.
Air Nostrum has since apologised to the badly-treated passengers and has promised to offer them compensation “for the inconvenience caused” by the “regrettable error.”
“Air Nostrum deeply regrets the damage caused yesterday to the passengers of flight IB8869 Vigo-Madrid due to a regrettable error attributable solely to the company. Next week we will contact each of the affected passengers to compensate them for the inconvenience caused. Our most sincere apologies,” the airline said in a statement.
FACUA-Consumers in Action has also filed a complaint against the airline, claiming that “the breach of contract incurred by the airline represents a violation of consumer protection regulations, which is why it must be subject to sanctions by consumer authorities.”
