People with mental health issues increase employment prospects in Aguilas via green economy
The town council of Águilas, the MAPFRE foundation and the Mental Health Association of Águilas are jointly promoting training for green jobs for people who struggle with their mental health

The Town of Águilas in southwest Murcia is underlining the green economy as part of a scheme to improve the employability prospects of people with mental health issues in the municipality.
As part of this programme, the Councillors for Environmental Education and Inclusion, Elena Casado and José Antonio Consentino, along with Juan Vicente Muñoz, representative of Fundación MAPFRE in the area, and Felipe Segundo Soler, president of the Mental Health Association Águilas, today presented diplomas to 10 participants of the training workshop for Green Employment.
This initiative is part of Fundación MAPFRE’s “Together We Can” program, which aims to promote the inclusion in the labour market of people with mental health problems and foster relationships between companies and social entities from an innovative approach that allows the inclusion of this group in the workplace.
The commitment to a more sustainable world has generated new jobs linked to the green economy and new business opportunities. Faced with this challenge, it is necessary to continue articulating resources and tools that contribute to the full inclusion of the most vulnerable groups in our society, such as the green employment model, thus offering new opportunities in emerging jobs with a wide range of possibilities for the inclusion of people with psychosocial disabilities in the labour market.
With this in mind, Fundación MAPFRE and the Mental Health Association have carried out a Job Training Workshop for Green Jobs, providing participants with the necessary knowledge and tools to perform effectively and successfully in these jobs.
Throughout the workshop, the participants acquired skills in occupational risk prevention, maintenance techniques for green and landscaped areas, use of machinery and tools, maintenance and safety and hygiene measures, as well as occupational health for the protection of the worker, including the proper use of safety equipment.
This workshop has had a total duration of 160 hours, distributed in 20 hours of skills, 80 hours of theoretical training and 60 hours of practice in collaborating companies in the sector, such as EcoHuerto La Vereda, RITEC Riegos y Tecnología, STV Jardinería, Vivero Medipalm, among others.
As a result of this program, two employment contracts have already been signed for members of the group, and their employability is only set to grow.
