Plaza de las Américas and Casa Amarilla, Alhama de Murcia
The Plaza de las Américas is home to the Casa Amarilla
Plaza de las Américas is a shaded park and square in the centre of Alhama de Murcia which is also home to the Centro Cultural V Centenario, originally built at the beginning of the 20th century when Alhama was undergoing a period of economic boom due to the presence of the spa and hotel as a private dwelling.
Wealthy families built country homes in what is now the main urban area of Alhama, and this house belonged to the powerful and influential Saavedra family of Murcia, who enjoyed the warm springs and the idyllic existence of their "country home" in amongst the orchards of the area. The area surrounding the house, which is also known as casa Amarilla, would have formed part of the original formal garden.
The name "Plaza de las Américas" comes from a map of the Americas which is set into the floor area in front of the Casa Amarilla.
There is plenty of parking in the streets nearby or in the underground carpark beneath the Plaza del Ayuntamiento below the town hall, which is no more than a one-minute walk away.
The Plaza de las Américas is one of the stopping-off points of the FREE ENGLISH language audiotour offered by the municipal tourist office (also provides street maps, leaflets etc) which can be followed by visitors at their leisure. Click for full information
