Port of Malaga skyscraper gets the go-ahead
The waterside tower block has been called an “aberration” by Costa del Sol objectors
After eight years of setbacks, the Malaga Port Authority has been given a preliminary green light to build a 150-metre high, five-star hotel along the famous Costa del Sol waterfront.
Plans were initially submitted for the 38-floor tower building in 2016 with the Authority hoping to open the luxury accommodation by 2020. But the proposal has faced fierce opposition from local residents and politicians, many of whom claim the building will be an “aberration” that will block the view of many historical landmarks, like the La Farola lighthouse.
However, on Monday November 20, the Urban Planning Commission agreed to modify legislation governing the Port of Malaga which will allow the hotel to be built on the Morro Platform, between piers 1 and 2.
The skyscraper, designed by Costa del Sol architect José Seguí, will cost in the region of 120 million euros and is being funded by Qatari group Al Alfia Holdings. The lavish hotel will boast 378 rooms, a convention centre with a capacity for 1,100 people and two underground car parks for 400 vehicles.
Now that the modification of the planning permission has been approved, the matter will be handed over to the Council of Ministers, the final hurdle to be overcome before building can begin.
Head of the Port Authority Carlos Rubio is confident that the luxury hotel will be open for business before the end of next year.
