Portugal triumph over Spain in Nations League final
It came down to a penalty shootout, which crowned Portugal as two-time champions

Cristiano Ronaldo, who had equalised in the 61st minute with his 138th international goal, was subbed off before extra time and watched the shootout in tears from the touchline. His emotion spilled over as Neves' kick hit the net, confirming Portugal as the first nation to win the trophy twice.
The match had started with high intensity. Spain struck first through Martin Zubimendi, but Nuno Mendes quickly cancelled it out. Mikel Oyarzabal restored Spain’s lead before Ronaldo’s volley levelled the game again. Both sides created late chances, but were denied by last-ditch defending and fine goalkeeping.
Spanish youngster Lamine Yamal struggled to make an impact, stifled by Mendes, and was withdrawn in extra time. In contrast, veteran Ronaldo delivered once more on the big stage.
As confetti rained down at the Allianz Arena, Portugal celebrated a hard-fought victory that underscored their experience, resilience and competitive spirit.
Spain had more sporting luck at the French Tennis Open this weekend, where Murcia-born Carlos Alcaraz made a sensational comeback from two sets down to take the title.
