ARCHIVED - President Sanchez greeted by boos at the National Day parade in Spain
The King of Spain was greeted warmly by onlookers at the national event in Madrid
Loud boos, shouts and calls for his resignation followed President of the Spanish Government, Pedro Sánchez, at the beginning and the end of the parade held in Madrid to celebrate Dia de la Hispanidad on Tuesday October 12, a national holiday in Spain. In contrast, King Felipe VI, who arrived at almost the same time as Mr Sánchez, who was running late, was welcomed by cheers and applause.
The president’s car arrived on the Paseo de la Castellana at 10:33am shortly before the military parade began, and the crowd showed their displeasure when Mr Sánchez’s name was announced over the intercom in Plaza de Lima. Just before getting back in his car to travel to an official reception at the Royal Palace, onlookers once again whistled and jeered, shouting “out” and “resign” at the retreating President.
King Felipe was joined at the celebration by his wife Queen Letizia and daughter, the Infanta Sofía. Princess Leonor was unable to travel to Madrid due to Covid safety restrictions at the school in Wales where she is currently studying.
The military parade had to be cancelled during the pandemic and was replaced by a brief act in the courtyard of the Royal Palace in 2020. This year it returned in all its glory, complete with 2,656 personnel, including members of the Armed Forces, Guardia Civil, Police, Civil Protection and firefighters, 68 aircraft and 115 vehicles.
After the officials were welcomed, the traditional parachute jump with the Spanish flag took place, thankfully without the sensational outcome of the 2019 parade when the jumper was hooked on a lamppost on Paseo de la Castellana. This was followed by the raising of the flag in tribute to the fallen in Spain.
The Eagle Patrol kicked off the air parade by painting the Spanish colours in the sky, although some claimed it looked more like a Republican flag, while aircraft from the Maritime Rescue and Guardia Civil also put on a show. Following the foot parade through the streets of Madrid, the event was closed by the Tercio Gran Capitan and the King Alfonso XIII of the Legion brigade.
