Primark is planning to open a new branch at the Bahia Sur shopping centre in San Fernando, Andalucía in the coming days, but at the same time the company has said today that they are planning to cut 400 jobs as part of a management overhaul in the UK.

The retailer, which is owned by Associated British Foods, said it has launched a consultation with staff as part of a programme to simplify its management structure in the UK. Primark’s UK director Kari Rodgers said, “The changes we are proposing will deliver a simplified administration system” and “provide more opportunities for career progression”, but some sources suspect that the slowdown in highstreet shopping as result of the Covid pandemic is also to blame.

The planned cuts come after Primark said the spread of the Omicron variant had had an impact on the number of customers shopping in its stores. According to the company, Primark’s UK sales were 10% lower in the 16 weeks leading up to January 8 compared to pre-pandemic levels two years ago. It added, however, that trading had improved somewhat recently as Omicron fears dissipated.

“We are now focused on supporting our colleagues who are affected by these proposed changes and will go through the consultation process”, Rodgers concluded.

In November 2020, Primark furloughed workers from its Catalonia, Asturias, Castilla y León and Andalusia stores in Spain’s temporary lay-off or ‘ERTE’ scheme, after its shops were forced to close due to Covid restrictions.
