Radio controlled sailing in Lo Pagán, San Pedro del Pinatar
The Radio Controlled Mar Menor Sailing Group has a permanent home in the newly built water sports centre in Lo Pagán.
The centre was provided by the San Pedro del Pinatar Town Hall and is adjacent to the well known Lo Pagán Marina and the fishing quay. The water sports centre overlooks the Mar Menor and boasts what must be the one of the finest facilities in the region. It facilitates such activities as water polo, kayaking, dragon boat racing and now radio controlled sailing has also been added to that list. The facility also has a state of the art gym so if you should feel the need to boost your own physical fitness then it is very well equipped.
While they welcome all classes of sailing yachts, the main racing class is the International One Metre known simply as an I.O.M. This class of yacht is one of two such classes recognised by the ISAF which is the governing body for international racing yachts and the Olympic classes. There are many national and international regattas organised world- wide producing both national and world champions every year.
Information on the I.O.M class can be found on the www.mya.uk web site, which is the U.K. Model Yachting Association and at www.rya.org.uk.
The members are a small group of enthusiasts who have been busy preparing this comprehensive facility with everything from an up to date web site, race equipment, through to a new rescue boat and engine so no need to worry if your boat develops a technical problem. They are now looking for more new members: experienced or beginners, all are most welcome. If you are new to this sport then we have members only too willing to help you along the way, as many of our members have years of experience in this exciting and interesting hobby. If you are a competent boat builder we can put you in contact with many suppliers of parts, or if you would prefer to buy a new or second-hand boat we can also help. Ladies are also most welcome: some wives and partners come along most weeks so you will not be alone. You can also be a vital part of the team: after all how is he going to turn up without forgetting his boat?
The group race every week and after sailing we retire to one of the adjacent beach bars for a coffee, a bite to eat and a chat. You do not need to worry if you have never sailed a boat of any kind before, or are completely new to R.C.Sailing: you will get all the help you need.
