ARCHIVED - Raging forest fires in Andalusia burn through 1,000 hectares in one weekend
Firefighters were called to tackle fires in Huelva, Córdoba, Almería, Málaga and Granada
Around 1,000 hectares of land has been badly burnt by forest fires across the region of Andalusia this weekend.
The regional government activated its Plan Against Forest Fires in Andalusia (Plan Infoca) on Sunday morning (July 25) in order to stabilise a fire in the municipality of Villarasa (Huelva), which spread across 600 hectares in under 24 hours and forced the closure of part of the A-493 motorway.
Another fire was reported in Gaena (Córdoba), on Saturday (July 24) and required six helicopters and 70 firefighters to get the flames under control.
Meanwhile in Almería, a forest fire was declared in the municipality of Sorbas on Saturday afternoon, which affected 100 hectares and is now under control, thanks to the region’s firefighters.
A fire in Málaga, in Alhaurín de la Torre, has also been brought under control by 38 firefighters, along with other emergency service professionals and a KA-70 helicopter.
The most recent fire to be tackled by firefighters was located in La Taha (Granada) which was extinguished on Monday morning (July 26) after burning through around six hectares in the Pitres-Capilerilla area.
This weekend’s extremely high temperatures certainly played a part in the alarming number of forest fires in Andalusia over the past few days, although the authorities are currently looking into any criminal actions that may have started the fires.
In other parts of Spain, the emergency services are still fighting to get wildfires in Tarragona and Barcelona under control.
