Restrictions begin on 13 Cabo de Gata beaches this weekend
A shuttle bus will be available to transport visitors to the Almeria beaches from July
Since 2014, the government in Andalucia has imposed restrictions on several beaches surrounding the Cabo de Gata-Nijar Natural Park as tourist numbers begin to swell. This year, 13 coastal resorts will be regulated for a total of 100 days beginning on Saturday June 17.
To protect the local wildlife and reduce the impact on residents, the Sustainability, Environment and Blue Economy Delegation routinely restricts unauthorised vehicle access to the beaches of the San José district, which is located within the Natural Park, shorelines between Genoveses and Cala Carbón.
“This restrictive measure is adopted every year by this Territorial Delegation, in order to make orderly public use and tourist enjoyment compatible with the objectives of conserving natural and cultural resources and their landscape and environmental values,” the Board explained. The measure has become unavoidable, it added, due to “the excessive influx of visitors in motor vehicles in the summer months.”
The affected beaches are: Playa de los Genoveses, Cala de los Amarillos, Cala Príncipe, Cala Chica del Barronal, Playa del Barranco del Barronal, Cala Grande del Barronal, Playa del Paredón, Playa del Barronal, Cala Palmito, Playa de Mónsul, Cala de la Media Luna, Cala Chicré and Cala Carbón.
Until Sunday September 24, patrols will man the perimeters of the 13 beaches, inspecting vehicles coming and going and ensuring that the exits are kept clear in case of possible emergencies.
The contract for these services has been awarded to Torres y González SL who this year will charge six euros, rather than five, for access to the beaches. The car park will have a maximum of 400 spaces and no other vehicles will be permitted once these are full.
To make access a little easier, a bus service will operate between the Cabo de Gata-Nijar Natural Park and the centre of San Jose from July 1. Tickets can be purchased online at www.autocaresbernardo.com up to the day before you travel.
