ARCHIVED - Rovi building new plant to manufacture 100 million doses of Moderna vaccine in Granada a year
The pharmaceutical company is building a new plant in Escúzar, Granada in the Andalusia region of Spain
The pharmaceutical company Rovi estimates that Moderna's production line for the active ingredient of the Covid-19 vaccine from its Granada plant has a production capacity of about 100 million doses per year.
Vice president and financial director of the firm, Javier López-Belmonte, highlighted that the agreement reached with the US company involves working with messenger RNA technology, and is confident that the agreement reached with Moderna will help to guarantee work for the local community, as the demand for this type of vaccine is expected to be strong in the forseeable future.
Both the Moderna and Pfizer pharmaceuticals have already indicated that a third dose of their products will be required in order to guarantee immunity from the new variants which are continuously emerging.
Apart from the growth opportunity that it represents for Rovi, it is a "very relevant" project for Madrid and Granada, and an important source of direct and indirect employment in a particularly complex year due to the effects of the pandemic on the business sector.
In order to offer sufficient capacity to manufacture the active principle ingredient of the Modern Covid-19 vaccine on this scale, the company is investing into new additional facilities at the installations of the Rovi Group in Granada, although the company has been present in the area since 2009.
"At the moment we are adapting our facilities to be able to start manufacturing the active ingredient in the third quarter of 2021", explained the vice president of the laboratories, who have calculated that this new production line in Granada has a capacity of about 100 million doses (of the active ingredient) per year.
Rovi, which has a plant in the Granada Health Technology Park (PTS), is currently working on the construction of a new plant in the municipality of Escúzar
