ARCHIVED - Ryanair drops mask-wearing on flights from April
This week, Jet2 became the first airline to scrap masks on its planes
After a shock announcement by Jet2 that holidaymakers travelling from England and Northern Ireland would no longer have to wear masks on flights, Irish budget carrier Ryanair has followed suit and announced that from next month, passengers on Michael O’Leary’s planes can also ditch the masks.
Mr O’Leary said that the change will come into force in April amid a “strong recovery”, and the airline announced several new routes for the summer season as coronavirus restrictions are relaxed across the globe.
Earlier this week, Spain gave the welcome news that UK travellers who have recovered from Covid can now enter Spain freely, while passengers from third countries who have been fully vaccinated with a WHO-approved jab, such as those developed in China and India, are also welcome.
The Ryanair boss said:
“As all Covid-19 travel restrictions have now been lifted, UK citizens and visitors can book a well-deserved summer getaway to exciting destinations.
“Ryanair is driving London’s post-Covid recovery as we grow across Europe, with new aircraft and new routes.”
Jet2 was the first airline to scrap the mask-wearing rule, and Ryanair’s decision to do the same has come as an equal surprise given that most of the major airlines vowed to maintain the rule until a collective decision had been made. For their part, easyJet, British Airways and Virgin Atlantic have all said that masks will still be mandatory on their flights.
A Jet2 spokesperson announced: “It is no longer a legal requirement to wear a face mask in England and Northern Ireland, including at our airports or on board our aircraft.
“However, as per UK Government guidance, we recommend that customers continue to wear a face mask in these spaces, and we remind customers that they will need to wear one when they get to their overseas destination.”
