ARCHIVED - Sabor a Malaga: artisan markets in the city welcome local food stalls
From November, local food products will be sold in Soho, La Merced and Muelle Uno markets
As of this month, ‘Sabor a Málaga’ will have a permanent place in the city’s handicraft and artisan markets. Twelve stalls will be distributed in each of the three most important markets in Málaga city: Soho, La Merced and Muelle Uno.
- Merced market: first Sunday of each month
- Soho market: fourth Sunday of each month
- Muelle Uno souk: three Sundays a month
‘Sabor a Málaga’ is a brand that has been running for 10 years now, and which aims to encompass food products and businesses in the province to unify all local food products under a single brand image. A total of 15 million euros has been invested in the project since 2011.
Now the local food products under this banner are to have pride of place in the capital city’s markets. Málaga’s craft markets have become a must for shopping for many local residents and, from now on, in addition to textiles, decorative pieces and other accessories, a wide variety of ‘Sabor a Málaga’ food products will be on sale.
Covid and the climate crisis behind the change
The initiative to bring local food to these popular markets has happened for two main reasons: the economic crisis after coronavirus and climate change.
The pandemic has affected the province’s agri-food sector, so this new plan is meant to contribute to the economic recovery of many companies. At the same time, climate change is one of the greatest threats facing society today and so, according to first vice-president and deputy for Sustainable Economic Development, Juan Carlos Maldonado, “by going local, zero kilometre, we reduce the carbon footprint” of this food.
