ARCHIVED - Saharan dust and mud rain return to Spain
An intense storm will bring a severe drop in temperature to much of Spain this week
There has been little let-up in the bad weather all across Spain since the beginning of March, and meteorologists have warned that in the coming days, an “intense nortada” will bring increasing instability and a temperature drop of up to 15ºC in some areas.
With the unsettled weather, many regions in southern Spain will notice the appearance of Saharan dust once again, which was so heavy last week that it turned the entire sky orange in parts of Murcia and Alicante. Although the latest episode won’t be nearly as thick, the experts from Meteored have warned people to hold off on hosing down those patios just yet.
Between Monday and Tuesday, March 28 and 29, the new storm will sweep up into Spain through Andalucía, causing the haze to return and painting the skies a sunset orange once more.
The State Meteorological Agency has advised that the Saharan dust will particularly affect the following areas at the beginning of the week:
- Cádiz
- Granada
- Málaga
- Almeria
- Córdoba
- Huelva
- Jaén
- Sevilla
- Alicante
- Castellón
- Valencia
- Murcia
On March 29, the skies in most of Andalucía will be cloudy and showers together with muddy rain are forecast. A similar outlook is forecast for the Region of Murcia, which is on red alert for Saharan dust, while the provinces of Alicante, Valencia and Castellón will dawn with cloudy skies and occasional rainfall, with a warning of reduced visibility in elevated areas due to suspended dust.
Elsewhere, this nortada will cause temperatures to drop between 10 and 15ºC lower than normal, according to Meteored climatologist Samuel Biener, although the temperatures will remain relatively stable on the Costa Tropical, in Almeria, the Region of Murcia and Alicante.
