Second 3.7 magnitude earthquake recorded in Cadiz in a week

The latest tremor comes just six days after another strong quake hit the Andalucían Gulf

Andalucía has turned into the seismic capital of Spain in recent weeks as it is continuously rocked by earthquakes. This is no cause for alarm, since the south of the country in general is pretty active when it comes to quakes.

According to the National Geographic Institute (IGN), the latest rumble occurred in the Gulf of Cadiz at 5.39pm on Tuesday November 12. It measured a magnitude of 3.7 on the Richter scale – a moderately strong reading - at a location with the coordinates of latitude 36.5710 and longitude -7.6952, at a depth of 17 kilometres.

Just six days ago, Cadiz was hit by an equally strong earthquake in almost the same spot: latitude 36.4587 and longitude -7.7346. However, on that occasion, its epicentre was much deeper, at 34 kilometres below the surface.

These are the two highest magnitude earthquakes recorded in Spain in the last month, but no injuries or material damages have been reported.

Andalucía is located near the boundary between the Eurasian and African tectonic plates, which makes it prone to seismic activity. The region has a long history of earthquakes, with some significant events occurring in the past.

One of the most noticeable quakes was registered in Almeria back in 2004. This measured a whopping 6.3 on the Richter scale and caused widespread damage.
