Sevilla unveils new speed radars with smiley faces
Motorists driving through the Andalucia town will be greeted with happy or sad emoticons depending on their speed
The municipality of La Algaba in Sevilla has implemented an innovative strategy in its approach to speed control by installing traffic radars that play on drivers’ emotions rather than automatically fining them.
Three of these radars have been placed on streets in the centre of the town and as motorists approach, they will be greeted by either a sad or happy emoticon, depending on the speed they are going. When a car exceeds the established limits, which in this case is 30 kilometres per hour, the radar will flash with a red frowning face.
On the other hand, if the driver is travelling within the speed limit, he will be met with a green smiley face.
It is hoped that the new signals will teach drivers to slow down with their immediately recognisable figures. Furthermore, the City Council believes that even the youngest occupants of the vehicle will be made aware of the traffic rules, thus promoting safe and responsible driving throughout the entire community.
The radars are located on Andrés Molina Morales Avenue, Calle Concepción Rodríguez de Torres Clavijo and at the entrance to the Rodríguez Borbolla Bridge.
