ARCHIVED - Seville lights up for Christmas on December 5
To save electricity, the street lights in Seville will be turned off an hour earlier in the evenings

Seville has decided to delay turning on its Christmas lights by one week this year, choosing to light up the streets on December 5. The slightly later start is only one measure the authorities are undertaking to try and reduce energy consumption, and the decision will no doubt irk many business owners and publicans, who pleaded with the government to launch the festive season at the same time as always.
Once they do go on, the Christmas decorations will be lit for one hour less each day, corresponding to the energy-saving rules imposed on shops. So, on regular days the lights will begin at 6.30pm and turn off at 10pm. On weekends and holidays, they will turn on at 6.30pm but switch off at the later time of 11pm. And on December 24 and 31, and January 1, they’ll remain on until 1am.
In another bid to cut down on the amount of electricity used, the company hired to install the lights has this year switched to more efficient LED bulbs in certain areas, such as Avenida de la Constitución and the streets Sierpes, Tetuán, Imagen, Laraña, Campana, Alfonso XII and Asunción and Plaza del Salvador, which use 22.2% less energy.
“As an administration we have to set an example in the face of the current energy crisis that affects homes and businesses. We believe that, without diminishing the momentum of Seville's trade during the Christmas season, which is in turn key for the economic and employment reactivation, we are contributing to the general reduction in energy consumption and, therefore, to further reducing carbon dioxide emissions of carbon”, said the delegate for Urban Habitat and Social Cohesion, Juan Manuel Flores.
With all of these measures, the Seville government hopes to save 30% on urban electricity this Christmas.
