A young man living in Estepona has been arrested on suspicion of murdering his mother after she travelled from the Netherlands because she was concerned for his mental health. A friend of the suspect warned his mother that he was acting strangely and displaying violent tendencies, so she immediately boarded a flight from the Netherlands to be with her child.

The girl, who originally house-shared with the accused, had to move into a hotel as she felt threatened by his erratic behaviour.

This same friend met the victim at Malaga airport on Monday December 5 and brought her to the flat they shared, where her son was waiting. Wanting to give the pair some privacy, the girl and her partner left the apartment for the day.

Alerted by neighbours that the door to the flat was standing open, the friend returned to their home in the Cancelada neighbourhood the next day to find the living room trashed and a bedroom door barricaded with furniture.

Despite this, it was possible to make out a figure lying motionless on the floor and the police were called. Several patrols arrived at the scene and identified the victim as the young man’s 61-year-old mother. It was immediately clear that she had suffered a violent death as she showed signs of strangulation and multiple heavy blows.

The very same day, officers from the Estepona Local Police and the National Police were called out to the A-7 motorway, where a very distressed individual was walking along the road in the direction of Malaga. He was treated by the ambulance crew and transferred to hospital.

Subsequent investigation revealed that the patient was the 26-year-old suspected of murdering his mother. He has been arrested for the crime but is currently undergoing psychiatric evaluation in the Costa del Sol Hospital.
