Spanish beach named and shamed as one of the worst in Europe
Southern Spain is famous for its golden shorelines, but one beach has been slated by The Telegraph
Spain is world-renowned for having some of the most pristine beaches around, with a remarkable 638 Blue Flags under its belt acknowledging the quality, cleanliness and superior facilities of its beaches.
But it’s not all fun in the sun as the Telegraph has just published its list of the 5 Worst Beaches in southern Europe and Spain has been named and shamed.
The rankings looked at some of the most popular tourist destinations, including France, Italy, Portugal, Croatia, Turkey and Greece, alongside Spain.
The British publication’s Spanish beach to avoid at all costs is no other than La Línea de la Concepción in Cádiz.
The Telegraph says: “Some might argue that the town has wide sandy beaches, but being situated directly on the border between Spain and Gibraltar, the view of the imposing Rock, at least on one side, presents a series of high-rise tower blocks rising like vertical newsrooms along the horizon.”
Ouch. “The nearby oil refinery,” it continues, “the largest on the Iberian Peninsula, is equally unattractive. Meanwhile, if you look out to sea, the horizon is dotted with oil tankers along the Bay of Gibraltar.”
"There are some signs of regeneration, but if we add to that La Línea's reputation as the capital of crime, the city still has a lot to do," the text concludes.
Echoing the Telegraph’s ranking, the Mirror adds: “Street crime is a popular sport among local youths and tourists are easy targets. Stick to the centre and avoid getting too drunk, staying in groups or using taxis.”
The other four beaches not recommended by the Telegraph report are Laganas in Greece, Albufeira in Portugal, Kemer in Turkey and Ploce in Croatia.
