Spanish council hires a witch to exorcise the city hall
The Huelva mayor’s office and the plenary hall were scattered with salt and burned rosemary
It has just emerged that before Christmas, the Huelva city hall building was the scene of a supposed ritual purification or exorcism. Cleaners were astonished to find the floors of the mayor’s office, the plenary hall and several other rooms covered in salt and burned rosemary, and smelling strongly of incense.
Conclusions were quickly drawn that someone had hired a ‘witch’ to perform some kind of ceremony to drive out evil spirits. Understandably, both local residents and politicians are keen to find out if public funds were used to pay for the wacky exorcism.
Mónica Rossi, spokesperson for Izquierda de Huelva, explained how the bizarre events came to light: “We received the information from people outside the city council, through different sources and at first we did not believe it. On November 16, salt and burnt rosemary were found in the plenary hall and some other municipal offices.
“Given this event it seemed very important to us to ask if public funds from the city council had been used to carry out this witchcraft ritual to cleanse evil spirits,” she added.
The council itself has only responded to deny any knowledge of the ‘witchcraft.’
Opinions on the street differ. Many residents, naturally enough, want to know who paid for the esoteric ritual and have even suggested that legal action should be taken against the culprit. But others can see the funny side and have congratulated the council for at least trying something a little bit different.
