Spanish fuel prices drop for the fifth week running
This is the cheapest petrol and diesel have been in Spain all year

Now that the weather is starting to pick up a bit, you might be tempted to hit the road and get out and about in the sunshine. Luckily, you don’t need to let fuel prices hold you back as petrol and diesel are the cheapest they’ve been all year.
The average price of a litre of diesel this week (beginning March 24) is €1.440 – that’s 0.7% less than last week and the cheapest it’s been since the second-last week of December.
Meanwhile, the average price of a litre of petrol also dropped 0.6% compared to last week, falling to €1.508, its lowest level since mid-November.
Fuel has become gradually more affordable since mid-July 2024 when this downward spiral began, an unusual trend since it coincided with the summer holiday season when the highest number of road trips are typically made. Between then and October, fuel prices plummeted by 8.9% for petrol and 9.2% for diesel.
Prices took an unfortunate upswing shortly before Christmas, an upward path that continued into the new year, but it appears that we’re on the right track again.
At today’s prices, filling an average 55-litre tank of diesel costs about €79.20, around five euros less than at the same time last year, when it cost about €84.26.
If you drive a petrol, a full tank will set you back roughly €82.94, around six euros less than in the same week in 2024, when the price was €88.93.
With this new drop, the average price of a litre of diesel remains below the levels it was at before the Russian invasion of Ukraine, which began on February 24, 2022, when it stood at €1.479 per litre. Petrol, meanwhile, also remains below the price of €1.591 per litre it had at that time.
Likewise, both fuels remain far from the peaks they reached in the summer of 2022, in July, when gasoline reached €2.141 and diesel €2.10.
At these levels, the price of 95 unleaded petrol in Spain is well below the European Union average of €1.646 per litre, and the eurozone average of €1.692.
In the case of diesel, the price in Spain is also lower than the EU average, which is €1.564, and the eurozone average, where it's €1.586.
