ARCHIVED - Spanish hotels rake in 5 per cent more profits this Easter than in 2019
Everything now points to a record summer season for tourists in Spain
Holy Week, the most important national celebration so far this year, has come to a close on a high, with many hotels across Spain averaging 5% more income than in pre-pandemic 2019. Expectations were always high for the first Easter without Covid restrictions, and the weather certainly helped, but the General Secretary of Hospitality Spain, Emilio Gallego, confirmed that even the most optimistic forecasts were exceeded in many parts of the country.
"In all areas we have noticed that there has been a lot of activity: on the beaches, inland, rural tourism, in all natural areas and of course, being Easter, in all cities that are interested in religious activities as is the case of Seville, Valladolid, Toledo or Zamora, which are very important claims for tourist activity," he stressed.
Despite rising inflation, which has undoubtedly bumped up the price of flights and hotel stays, national travel has rebounded strongly and international tourism is also quickly picking up. All of this, Mr Gallego said, points to “very powerful activity throughout this summer.”
The Spanish capital has been the stand out this year, reporting a 6.5% increase in hospitality spending compared to last year, while in Andalucía, which has not quite reached pre-pandemic levels, this Easter was nevertheless "one of the best we can remember."
In Murcia, hotels and other tourist accommodations in many areas were fully booked well before Holy Week but the upswing in the weekend temperatures resulted in even more last-minute bookings.
In the popular resort of Cartagena, 92% of all hotel rooms were occupied, and in nearby 85% of all hotel rooms were booked.
“If Easter is good, the summer will be better,” president of Hosteaguilas, Alfonso Soler, has predicted.
