ARCHIVED - Spanish Royals open new exhibition at the Alhambra in Granada
The new exhibition, ‘Odalisques. From Ingres to Picasso,’ at the Alhambra in Granada explores the western portrayal of harems.
A new exhibition at the Alhambra featuring some of the art world’s most famous paintings has been inaugurated by Spain’s King Felipe and Queen Letizia.
The exhibition, which is on display until September 10, focuses on the portrayals of odalisques, the slave-concubines of Turkey’s harems, which became popular during the Orientalism art period in the 19th and 20th centuries.
Spread across three different rooms, the exhibition will examine how odalisques were portrayed by western artists, who presented a romantic and highly idealised picture, often eroticising the roles carried out by these chambermaids, painting them as voluptuous nudes or in ornate clothing.
The exhibition includes 48 pieces by some of the Orientalism art movement’s biggest artists including Ingres, Delacroix, Chasseriau, Gerome, Bernard, and Picasso, including one of Picasso’s most famous pieces, ‘Femme d'Alger.’
Alongside the paintings are a selection of photographs and films of the real odalisques of the 19th and 20th centuries, highlighting the different between the realities of life for these slaves and the romanticised view of them portrayed by western artists.
The free exhibition is being held in the Palacio de Carlos V at the Alhambra and can be visited from Monday to Friday from 10 am to 2 pm and from 4 pm to 8 pm, and as part of a guided tour on Saturdays at 10 am and 11 am.
Tickets for the guided tours and visits to the Alhambra and Generalife complex can be booked at https://tickets.alhambra-patronato.es/en/.
