ARCHIVED - Storm Celia puts Malaga on red weather alert: Andalusia forecast March 14-17
Persistent rainfall is expected throughout much of Andalucía until the end of the week
Storm Celia is making its presence known in Spain, turning the sky an eerie orange in the Region of Murcia and Alicante province and promising heavy, intense rain throughout Andalucía until Thursday, after which point the showers should only persist in the eastern part of the community.
The severity of the weather has led the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) to issue an extreme red warning for Malaga on Monday March 14, with more than 120 litres of rain per square metre expected in a mere 12 hours. The showers will also be persistent in Cadiz and strong easterly winds with occasional gusts are predicted.
The rain will ease off slightly on Tuesday March 15 but very strong gusts are forecast for Almeria, where a yellow wind warning has been issued from 3pm onwards. In general though, the temperatures will rise notably once again, with highs of 23ºC expected.
Looking ahead to Wednesday March 16, storm Celia will most likely move further south, and although weaker than earlier in the week, the storm will still bring plenty of rain to eastern Andalucía. Although no weather warnings are in place, strong gusts will persist in Almeria, while the mercury will take another dip to reach maximum temperatures of between 15 and 19ºC.
The worst of the weather should have passed by Thursday March 17 and the thermometers will be on the rise once more, reaching 21ºC in Sevilla. Nevertheless, some rain will persist and localised storms can’t be ruled out throughout the day.
While undoubtedly unpleasant, the persistent rain is much needed in Andalucía, as just last Friday officials were forced to declare an exceptional drought situation in all of the community’s basins, with the exception of Granada. The low rainfall so far this year means that reservoir levels in the western Costa del Sol has dropped to 37.74% of their total capacity.
Where an exceptional drought situation has been established, it is forbidden to use water fit for human consumption for the following activities: street washing, filling private swimming pools, irrigation of gardens, public and private parks, golf courses, car washing outside authorised establishments, ornamental fountains that do not have a closed water circuit and public showers.
