ARCHIVED - Strong earthquake measuring 4.1 on the Richter scale hits Malaga
The Costa del Sol was shaken by a magnitude 4.1 earthquake in the early hours of Monday morning
During the early hours of Monday morning, September 26, an earthquake of magnitude 4.1 has been registered on Andalusia’s Costa del Sol with its epicentre in Malaga, as reported by the National Geographic Institute (IGN).
The earthquake was felt in several municipalities in the province of Malaga, but thankfully has not yet been known to have caused any personal injury or material damage.
The IGN indicates that the earthquake took place at 3.48am, and had its epicentre in Malaga city at a depth of 69 kilometres.
In Fuengirola, Mijas and the capital of Malaga the earthquake was felt with intensity 3 on the Richter scale, while in Rincón de la Victoria and Casabermeja it was felt with intensity 2.
The Emergency Services 112 in Andalusia have reported that they have not received any calls for help or damage related to the earthquake in the community.
What should you do if there is an earthquake?
Small earthquakes are not uncommon in the south of Spain, but anything registering with a magnitude of 4 or more begins to be serious.
The IGN indicates on its website that people should be prepared at all times with an earthquake survival kit in their homes or cars, including a first aid kit, dynamo torches (flashlights which don’t need batteries to work), bottled water and non-perishable food, a whistle, a battery-powered radio and a fire extinguisher.
During an earthquake, your best bet is to duck under a table and hold on to it. Above all, stay as calm as possible and keep away from furniture, windows and lamps. If you are outdoors, stay away from buildings, walls and electric poles which could fall over and hurt you. If you are driving, stop in a safe place, turn on the car’s hazard lights and stay inside the vehicle.
