ARCHIVED - Strong winds cause widespread chaos in Andalusia
The adverse weather has resulted in two injuries and a hundred incidents in Málaga, Andalucía
Signalling the arrival of the first winter DANA is Spain, Málaga has emerged from weekend battered and bruised and more than a hundred serious incidents were registered in the province since the storm took hold on Friday November 19. The capital and Fuengirola were the worst hit, with gusts reaching 87 kilometres in the latter by mid-morning.
The driving winds caused branches and entire trees to topple, while street furniture was flung around and even some Christmas lights were blown down. Two pedestrians were also injured: one man in Málaga was badly hurt when a metal bar fell on him as he passed by the train tracks, while in Fuengirola, another person suffered head injuries when a bucket fell from the roof of a house.
Among the most notable incidents in the capital was the flooding of the Baños del Carmen spa, a coastal establishment that suffers this same fare every time the water levels rise.
“Right now the restaurant is like an island, surrounded by water of about 40 or 50 centimetres," explained the manager, Adolfo Jaime.
Local Police in Fuengirola received about 50 calls on Friday alone, one of which notified officers that a chiringuito on Paseo Marítimo Rey de España has suffered serious damage when the roof and part of the building collapsed. On the same street, the roof of a bar, a telephone pole and a tree were also blown down by the gusts.
With all this destruction it appears that Andalucía is not out of the woods yet, with a yellow weather warning in place on Monday November 22 for strong winds and rain, with Aemet predicting that the bad weather will continue at least until the end of the week.
