Sunday summer opening hours begin in Malaga
From June 4, supermarkets and stores in the Costa del Sol will open on Sundays and bank holidays
The summer season has officially kicked off in Spain’s Costa del Sol and from the first weekend of June, shops and supermarkets in High Tourist Influx Areas will be allowed to open on Sundays and public holidays, which amounts to 20 additional working days.
In Málaga province, the towns that fall under this umbrella include Algarrobo, Benalmádena, Estepona, Fuengirola, Málaga capital, Manilva, Marbella, Mijas, Nerja, Rincón de la Victoria and Vélez-Málaga. Here, stores will open their doors on June 4, 11, 18 and 25, July 2, 9, 16, 23 and 30, August 6, 13, 15, 19, 20 and 27 and September 3, 8, 10, 17 and 24.
In addition, shops, department stores and commercial centres will remain open throughout September.
Business owners, and shoppers no doubt, consider this a “very positive” move, but the unions have cautioned that Sunday openings are “destroying small and medium-sized businesses.”
While Malaga prepares for an influx of summer tourists, the Chamber of Commerce has pointed out that extended hours not only provides a better service for customers, but it also increases the number of retail jobs on offer locally and profits for business owners.
However, Antonio Solano, Secretary General of Commerce at UGT Málaga, has dismissed claims that Sunday and holiday openings create more employment, maintaining that during the high season, the existing staff simply “work fewer hours daily” spread over the week.
Moreover, he is adamant that summer opening hours in large shopping centres in these Tourist Influx Areas have directly resulted in the closure of some 1,900 small shops in Málaga capital and the loss of around 4,000 local jobs since the start of the pandemic.
