ARCHIVED - Swedish toddler kidnapped by his father found safe in Marbella
The man fled to the Costa del Sol with his three-year-old son after threatening the boy’s mother
A three-year-old child has been found safe and well in the Malaga municipality of Marbella after he was taken from Sweden by his father when his custody rights were revoked. The boy’s maternal grandmother has travelled to Andalucía and now has the toddler in her care.
The authorities in Sweden issued an international protection warrant for the minor last week and tipped off the National Police that he was headed to Spain with the child. According to official reports, the father threatened the toddler’s mother that he would abscond with him to Columbia if she didn’t sign an unofficial contract granting him sole custody.
According to Spanish investigators, the boy’s father, who has an “extensive criminal record” in his Scandinavian home country, took a long road trip to Spain before landing in Marbella, where his own parents now reside.
Once the kidnapping was reported in Sweden, the man’s custody rights were revoked and the child’s grandmother flew to Malaga and presented herself at the Marbella Police Station.
The National Police eventually located the toddler and his father, and the child was reunited with his maternal grandmother.
Last month, a young Swedish girl with autism spectrum disorder was traced to the Almeria town of Huércal-Overa, where she was found in the company of a 26-year-old man, unbeknownst to her distraught parents. The young man claimed he had fallen in love with the vulnerable child, whom he met online, and that they had been planning on staying in Almeria for three months.
