Tajo del Molino hiking route in Teba: A short and easy walk in the Malaga countryside
Exploring the spectacular Tajo del Molino de Teba walking route in Málaga
Just three kilometres from the heart of Teba, a town in inland Málaga, lies one of Andalucía’s most remarkable attractions: the Tajo del Molino or Tajo de Torró, a breathtaking limestone canyon. Locals marvel at its perfectly curved gorge, often mistaking it for the handiwork of an artist or engineer rather than a creation of nature.
The Tajo del Molino area boasts numerous caves and crevices formed by the natural processes of karstification, aided by the waters of the Arroyo de la Venta stream. The charm of this circular route, spanning no more than four kilometres and lasting about three hours, depends largely on the weather conditions and the pace of your journey.
Begin your adventure on the C-341 road connecting Teba and Campillos, parking your vehicle at the Huertas de Torrox. As you ascend alongside the stream, take note of the varying water levels, with the route offering an even more enchanting experience after recent rainfall.
During the hike, you’ll traverse the gorge, encounter several caves – most notably the Cueva de las Palomas – and stumble upon the remnants of an ancient flour mill, which lends its name to the gorge. Ascend to the gorge’s summit for a panoramic vista before descending with the aid of a rope, following an old goat path back to the starting point to complete the circuit. After your trek, you can take advantage of the nearby picnic area to enjoy a leisurely meal.
The Tajo del Molino area teems with diverse flora and fauna. Keep an eye out for griffon and Egyptian vultures, along with other nocturnal birds of prey. The abundance of small caves also harbours various bat species, while summer visitors may catch a glimpse of the elusive mountain goat. The landscape is adorned with palmettos, rosemary, asparagus, wild olive trees, and orchids, contributing to the area’s natural allure.
