A little background information about the theatre
The history of the Teatro Principal de Alicante goes back to 23rd September 1845, when 21 local dignitaries, two aristocrats and two important land-owning families met to decide to build a theatre. In their opinion the city needed a theatre worthy of its cultural prestige, and within a month, on 18th October the same year, the Town Hall had granted them the land on which to carry out their project.
Construction work began in the Plaza del Barranquet in October the following year on the “Teatro Nuevo”, so called to differentiate it from the other theatre which already existed on the Calle Liorna. The official opening ceremony took place on 25th September 1847, and ten years later its name was changed to “Teatro de Alicante”. Not long afterwards the name of “Teatro Principal” was adopted.
Located in the centre of the city, it has no adjoining buildings or annexes, standing alone in the square. Its neo-classical façade is dominated by the six Doric columns which are crowned by a triangular piece. Inside, the theatre area is semi-circular and spectators are seated on four levels. Reform work has been carried out on various occasions, most noticeably after the Civil War to repair bomb damage, and the latest work in 1991 was made possible by a generous contribution from the Town Hall, the CAM bank and various regional ministries of the Generalitat Valenciana.
The theatre currently seats 1,072 in the audience, although reduced visibility means that normally only 960 are made available.
