Ten people arrested after hashish smugglers caught using Ukrainian drones to fly drugs into Spain
The Spanish National Police force confirmed they stopped drones flying hashish from Morocco to Spain
Ukrainian-made drones have been caught by the Spanish National Police force flying hashish from Morocco to Spain. The arrested suspects, based in the southern region of Andalucía, were believed to be flying the drones across the narrow strait of Gibraltar.
The hashish was coming from Morocco and after the drones dropped off the goods they returned to the African country without ever actually landing in Spain. The drones were capable of transporting up to 10kg of the drugs in one single trip. Furthermore, the range of the Ukrainian-made drones was more than 50km.
These drones, with their fantastic range, were manufactured on a small scale in Ukraine by organised criminals before being transported to Spain via road. The criminal gang that have now been arrested are believed to be stationed in the Costa del Sol and in Gibraltar.
It is believed that the manufacturing of drones has boomed in Ukraine following the Russian war which began in 2022. Furthermore, the arrests were made in collaboration with Ukrainian and Polish law enforcement, as six properties were searched in Marbella and Algeciras.
There the National Police seized three drones, tools, remote control devices and ‘significant quantities’ of cash and drugs suspected of entering Spain via the unusual aerial route.
Spain is a main entry point for drugs into Europe because of its close ties with former colonies in Latin America and its proximity to Morocco, a top cannabis producer.
