The CIM building of the UPCT university in Cartagena
A modern university building inside a historic Spanish naval training centre

The CIM campus of the Universidad Politécnica de Cartagena (UPCT) is a modern building which is in fact a rehabilitation of the old Cuartel de Instrucción de Marinería, the officer training centre which was a central part of the centuries-old relationship between the city of Cartagena and the Spanish navy.
It is home to the Business Science department of the university, and is also used as a venue for a variety of social and cultural events in the city. At the same time, it is a fascinating example of how modern architecture can be grafted onto historic buildings: the university premises have effectively been installed inside the walls of the CIM, leaving the exterior façade almost untouched.
The CIM is located on the Calle Real which leads towards the port of Cartagena past the Arsenal, at the roundabout where this street becomes the Paseo Alfonso XII.
The Museo Naval (naval museum) of Cartagena is located on the seaward side of the building.
