The cracking giant: Andalucía’s biggest oak fights for survival
La Peana, the monumental oak in Serón, is slowly giving way despite efforts to save it

Recent inspections revealed the fracture has grown by several millimetres, prompting experts to return for a fresh assessment. The Ministry of Sustainability and Environment has been closely monitoring La Peana, with nearly 20 visits since late 2022. They describe the tree as being in an "advanced process of senescence" - a natural but unstoppable ageing process that will eventually claim the tree’s life. Their goal, however, is to slow that inevitable moment for as long as possible.
Standing at 18.5 metres tall with a sprawling crown covering almost 302 square meters, La Peana is a sight to behold. Its name comes from the impressive 15-metre circumference “neck” at the base that serves as a pedestal. Experts believe it hides cavities inside the trunk, caused by fungi and decay, which weaken the tree.
The original crack emerged in 2020 and is believed to be due to a mix of factors: the weight of heavy branches, fungal rot that eats the wood from within, and weather conditions. Support struts and pruning were installed to ease the strain, but the battle to preserve this natural treasure is ongoing.
Despite the challenges, local authorities promise to continue taking every possible step to protect La Peana, a living monument and symbol of natural heritage for Serón and beyond. It’s a reminder that even the mightiest giants have their limits, but with care and attention, their stories can live on a little longer.
