ARCHIVED - The Feria de Abril festival in Seville: why is the April fiesta in May this year?
Seville’s biggest festival of the year is a week-long riot of colourful flamenco dancing and typical Spanish culture
Seville is due to hold its famed April Fair once again this year after it was cancelled for the last two years due to Covid. Thousands of visitors will flock to the Andalusian capital city to enjoy the Feria de Abril’s week of festivities, which begins on Sunday May 1 at midnight and ends on Saturday May 7.
The Feria de Abril in Seville is an iconic Spanish festival, filled with traditional flamenco dancing and costumes, as well as the obligatory special foods and free-flowing drinks that accompany all Spanish fiestas. If you’ve never been, it’s a sight to behold and a top tourist attraction for anyone visiting Spain.
Strangely enough, in 2022 the April Fair will not be held in April at all, but in May. Actually, this isn’t the first time this has happened, because the Feria also took place in May in 2011, 2014 and 2019. But why is Seville’s Feria de Abril in May?
Traditionally, the Feria de Abril is held two weeks after Easter. This year, Holy Week started on Sunday April 10 (Palm Sunday) and ended on Sunday April 17 (Easter Sunday). This is why the Feria de Abril 2022 starts on Sunday May 1 and ends on Saturday May 7.
When will it be a public holiday in Seville?
Thanks to the fact that this year’s Feria de Abril is celebrated in May, starting on Sunday May 1, people living in Seville will have two public holidays. The first is May 1 itself, which is International Workers Day or Labour Day, and is a public holiday in all of Spain, and which, as it falls on a Sunday this year, has been moved to Monday May 2.
The second, Farolillos Wednesday, is on May 4 and will be local public holiday, while Seville schools will be closed between May 2 and 4.
