The fishing port and leisure marina of Cabo de Palos
The port and marina are still at the heart of activity in Cabo de Palos
The fishing port and leisure marina of Cabo de Palos are at the very heart of the town on the southern shore of the headland, and offer mooring berths to a total of 185 craft of up to 15 metres in length and 2.5 metres draft, all within a total area of 24,300 square metres.
The marina contains five floating jetties and the local fishing boats generally bring their catches ashore on the eastern side of the port, whose entrance is protected by a breakwater across the mouth of the enclosed area. The port is managed directly by the government of the Region of Murcia, and a port guard is on duty from 8.30 to 20.30 every day.
In the past the port was the centre of activity in Cabo de Palos as the main economic activity was fishing, and nowadays it still remains the hub of the life of the town. Most of the shops, bars and restaurants are clustered close to the eastern bank, while on the western edge are the local church and visitors centre, as well as the Policía Local offices. The medical centre is also just a one-minute walk from the western bank.
