Many people in Almeria have been left wondering why a plane was circling around the city’s airport over and over again yesterday, Monday February 14, and whether there was some sort of emergency.

But there is an explanation.

It all started when a Boeing 777 belonging to Swiss Air took off from Almeria airport at 11.12am. According to the information on the Flightradar24 website, the flight was flight LX55721 from Almeria, with destination Almeria.

The plane flew around in circles for four hours and 12 minutes in the sky over Almeria and finally landed at 3.24pm.

So what was the reason for this bizarre flight trajectory?

According to Aena sources, it was a training flight, which is common at Almeria airport due to its low air traffic. For the residents of Costacabana, these kind of flights are a common occurrence, lasting for many hours like the one yesterday.

Airlines request these training flights in advance, and Aena indicates the best schedule for them based on the level of airport traffic. The training flights are used to allow pilots and flight crews to practice and even get their flight qualifications. They are accompanied by an instructor at all times who supervises all the exercises, which normally include landings and take-offs to familiarise them with the manoeuvres, as well the work of permanent communication with the control tower.
