The ultimate city guide to Barcelona: Top 11 must-visit attractions and where to store your luggage
These are the spots you absolutely cannot miss when you go to Barcelona
Barcelona is one of the oldest European capitals. And, of course, it has more than ten attractions. This majestic city can be explored for weeks. But if you only have limited time, they will help you feel the atmosphere. So, use any luggage storage Barcelona can offer and explore the beauty of the city. There are facilities near all the locations in this article. So you can walk around without heavy bags.
1. La Rambla
They say that if you have never walked along La Rambla, you have not been to Barcelona. This promenade has been a true landmark of the Catalan capital for over 250 years. It is popular with both tourists and locals – it is always crowded. Living statues, beautiful palaces, plane trees, street cafés, souvenir kiosks, architectural monuments – La Rambla, like a border, divides worlds. The Gothic Quarter and El Raval, the seaport and Plaza Catalunya. Only 1.2 kilometres long – and you can walk along it endlessly!
2. Columbus monument
La Rambla conventionally begins from this monument. According to legend, the monument to the famous navigator is located here for a reason – it was here that his ships moored to tell Their Majesties the good news of the fateful discovery. Nowadays, the monument is not just a feast for the eyes – it also boasts an excellent observation deck. The elevator will take you to a height of 60 metres, from where Barcelona will appear at your fingertips. Impressions are guaranteed!
3. Seaport
If you take a short walk from the monument towards the sea, you will soon be able to admire the seaport. Excellent views of it open up from the Rambla del Mar pedestrian bridge. The port promenade also has great shopping centres, cafés and restaurants, and the famous Barcelona Aquarium.
4. The Gran Teatro del Liceu
This is a historic theatre, opened almost 300 years ago and is considered one of the most important in Spain. The exterior facade looks elegant, but it cannot be compared to the interior decoration. It is simply luxurious!
The pompous Baroque style, with velvet, mirrors, crystal chandeliers, and ceiling ornaments, has been preserved to this day, despite all the vicissitudes of history. By the way, you can admire the interiors not only at the opera premiere. The theatre awaits guests for a guided tour.
5. Boqueria market
The most famous gastronomic paradise in Barcelona has delighted visitors for about 700 years. But even if we put aside its historical value, the counters of Boqueria are an explosion of taste, colour and aroma. Here, you can try absolutely everything – from bread from the nearest bakery to exotic fruits and still-live seafood. Excellent oysters are sold at the market in the seafood section – be sure to stop by. They will open the shellfish for you, sprinkle it with lemon, and you can put it in your mouth. Enjoy!
6. Canaletes fountain
This richly decorated fountain is another symbol of Barcelona. There is a legend that everyone who drinks water from this fountain will want to come back here as soon as possible. You can check for yourself whether this is true or not.
The section of Canaletes Boulevard ends the Rambla Boulevard. Here, you can celebrate the walk with lunch or dinner in one of the cafes, choose souvenirs, and take pictures of the facades of the palaces and the sparkling shop windows. Or continue the route if you still have strength.
7. Gothic Quarter
To the left of the Rambla Boulevard is the iconic Gothic Quarter. Having repeatedly delighted architects, artists, directors (the famous film "Perfume" was filmed here), geniuses, and ordinary people, the Gothic Quarter of Barcelona can boast not centuries but millennia of history. Here, you can see the ruins of a Roman fortress, cathedrals from the gloomy Middle Ages, palaces that remember the Inquisition and elegant mansions of the Art Nouveau era. Probably, a time machine was built in Barcelona long ago.
8. Barcelona Cathedral
When walking through the Gothic Quarter, be sure to take a map. Getting lost in its gloomy alleys is a piece of cake. However, you will find one architectural masterpiece even without a map – this is the majestic Barcelona Cathedral, the main temple of the city. It is more than 700 years old.
9. Grand Royal Palace
Do you like dark mediaeval stories? Then you will surely enjoy a walk through the echoing halls of the Royal Palace in Barcelona. Its legends are almost a thousand years old.
The Counts of Barcelona and the Kings of Aragon lived and ruled here. The famous Christopher Columbus came here on a mission. Here, the discovery of a new route to India was first announced – and a new era in human history began. Within these walls sat the Chamber of the Holy Inquisition, which fought from here against all disobedient people until the 19th century. And in the square in front of the Palace, knightly tournaments were held, and sometimes executions were held.
10. Santa Maria del Mar
The genuine pearl of mediaeval Catalan Gothic is considered to be the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Mar. Its history dates back to the beginning of the 14th century. The cathedral was built in an unprecedentedly short time for that era, in just 50 years. The cathedral has survived many troubles – attacks by invaders, wars, epidemics, fires. But it managed to survive, and pleases visitors to this day.
11. Ciutadella Park
The first city park of Barcelona is not in vain and is considered an open-air museum. On its solid territory there was a place for statues, monuments and memorials, a lake with boats, a beautiful cascading fountain. There are many cosy walking areas, as well as a zoo – one of the most interesting in Europe.
A detailed inspection of all the places described will take a lot of time. If you don't have much time, perhaps you should limit yourself to one thing but stay there longer. Or even better, come to Barcelona for a few days and dedicate all this time to walking around the city.
